There
can be all kinds of events in that area," said Kather, who teaches photography, video
art, humanities and women's studies courses at Elmira College and photography
courses at Cornell University.
"An Intimate View," intended to display art where people are not expecting it, was
initially exhibited at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, Waverly Free Library,
Dorman Library in Bath and Arnot Mall in Big Flats in August and Elmira College in
December.
"I thought, 'Man, this is the best place,'" she said of the transportation center.
"Most bus stations are not where you want to be hanging out," Kather said. "I liked
that, that it brought an aspect of the art world to people who might not think about
going over to the Arnot Art Museum -- and, in fact, then maybe they would go to the
Arnot Art Museum after seeing that, and then create art themselves."
Tina Hager, mobility manager at C Tran, formerly Chemung County Transit, said she
was looking down the long hallways in the transportation center and thought they
really needed something to brighten them up.

"The county painted and it looked nice, but I thought artwork would really work well
there," said Hager, who was museum educator at the Chemung County Historical
Society for 11 years.
Kather's images of regional places and everyday things are accessible and a natural
beginning point for having art in a public space, where people are waiting 20 or 30
minutes for a bus, she said.
"This is a good kickoff now that the Promenade is finished. What can you do in
January? Well, you can install an exhibit," Hager said.
"To me, it was a way to bring something to that space that wasn't there before," she
said. "Sometimes the arts don't get the importance that they need. Especially when
you're in tough economic times, it's hard for people to see the value in something
that can seem superfluous."
Former Mayor John Tonello is very happy that the photo exhibit is launching public
programming at the Promenade, a project that was a priority with his administration
but took several years to get under way.
"It sets the right tone for our goal," said Tonello, who earlier started the practice of
rotating public art displays on the walls of City Hall.
"The Promenade is a perfect venue for allowing people to not just experience art but
other activities and things that people want to show off about the region, about the
city," he said. "I think people will see this is a great place to showcase not just art but
other activities and things that are part of their mission."
In addition to revitalizing the viaduct and making it clean, bright and safe, the goal
was to provide space for community partners to do programming independent of the
city, Tonello said.
"The viaduct, whatever you think of it, is a major part of downtown. It's a part of the
city's core. The first step was cleaning it up," he said.
Next was making it a destination, rather than a place that people turned away from,
he said. "That would then lend itself to the other kind of programming that this
photography exhibit is a great example of."
This display will be up through June, and the hope is to follow with exhibits by other
artists, Hager said.
ยป For more information or to post a comment: www.jankatherphotography.com.Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903070485763715271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7105798863672418079.post-89665815273930708692011-12-10T09:50:00.001-08:002011-12-10T09:51:42.065-08:00Facebook Link<a href="Your work in the show tonight was absolutely stunning. Love the storefronts displaying such an eclectic collection of weathered wares. The objects reveal so much about "place." And, of course, the reflections provide much content - the photograph with the gumball machine even offers an intimate view of the artist herself! It's a bit startling to suddenly recognize the, yes, intimate activity of the artist in such a literal way in the piece itself! Good rich stuff! I liked your writing as well. Oh, and the dolls - My initial thought was that they were in the window of "Four Seasons" the ceramic shop fronting the adult book store, but when I drove up through, I didn't see them there. But wait........don't tell me........!Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01903070485763715271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7105798863672418079.post-61031461229578674852011-08-08T05:45:00.000-07:002011-08-09T07:46:46.802-07:00Jeff Murray writes about An Intimate View

I will take a day on a weekend and just drive the rural roads with no preset destination in mind looking for photo opts. I often move in to photograph one thing that I had seen from my car or motorcycle and turn around and see something totally out of the ordinary almost leaping out at me to photograph it. I still like looking for extreme contrast like something very beautiful contrasted by something very plain and ordinary. I am determined as redneck as it sounds to one day buy a bucket truck just so I can get up in the air high enough to get those angles over top of all the power lines etc.

Their son/grandson had strep throat that needed to be treated. The young ones were curious and started asking questions, however, they didn't want to be recorded or photographed. Mom did ask me to photograph her with her youngest son, which I did. Here are some of their comments:

Young man with strep throat: "What is that photograph made of? Is it on glass?" His throat hurt him and he didn't really care to talk, but he was interested in the process.

Grandfather: "That is what cellphones are for." He pulled his cellphone out to show me a photo of beautiful sunset that he had taken. My photo of the Chemung River reminded him of the Adirondacks, though "the rocks are more like big boulders in the Adirondacks." An upcoming fishing expedition came to mind, and they enthusiastically described a camping trip to the north country.

The glacier that crept across this part of New York State during the Ice Age left some wonderful small lakes, like Cayuta Lake in Alpine. The day I photographed, I found many people launching their boats to enjoy a day on the water. I was more intrigued by the plantlife floating on and under the surface of the water. So many colors and shapes that shifted, depending on how I stood in relation to the sun shining on the water!

The image above is of the Chemung River in Steuben County and is the only print at Schuyler Hospital that is NOT of a place in Schuyler County.
